How To Stand As A Councillor

Be the change you want to see! Are you thinking of standing as a Brackley Town Councillor? Democracy thrives on competition; without multiple candidates, there is no real election!
We have compiled some useful information to make the process of standing as a councillor as simple as possible. If however, you still have questions, don’t hesitate to call us in the office on 01280 811 521, email comms@brackleynorthants-tc.gov.uk, or visit us in the office – 20 Market Place Brackley, NN13 7DS (Opposite The Plough).
Residents will have the opportunity to elect their representatives to Brackley Town Council this year. Elections will take place on 1 May. Once elected, Councillors serve a four-year term, working together to discuss and vote on key local matters.
The town is divided into four wards—North, South, East, and West—with each ward represented by four councillors, making a total of sixteen councillors. If a ward has four or fewer candidates standing for election, the seats are uncontested, and no vote is required in that ward.
If you are interested in standing as a councillor and contributing to Brackley’s future, the following guide provides essential information and step-by-step guidance to help you get started.
- Collect or print your nomination papers
- Fill in the required information
- Obtain two signatures*
- Sign the papers yourself
- Have a witness sign the papers
- Deliver in person to the West Northamptonshire Council office in Towcester (No appointment needed**)
*When completing nomination papers, both your proposer and seconder will need to provide their polling district and elector number. The polling district will be listed as "Brackley," followed by the ward in which they reside. These details can be obtained directly from Electoral Services.
To request this information, individuals can contact Electoral Services by phone or email, providing their own details to receive their polling district and elector number. Please note that, due to data protection regulations, individuals may only request their own elector number and cannot do so on behalf of others. However, this process is straightforward and typically takes just a few minutes via phone or email.
